Yahoo Mail cut free storage from 1 TB to 20 GB. What to do about it

What changed

For most of the last decade a free Yahoo Mail account came with 1 TB, which was so much that nobody managed it. Yahoo's storage FAQ now reads: "Yahoo Mail currently includes 20 GB of free storage with every account." (Yahoo help) The change took effect in 2025.

Twenty gigabytes is still more than Gmail's 15 or Outlook.com's 15. The difference is that Yahoo users were told for years not to bother deleting anything, and many of them took the advice. A mailbox that has quietly collected mail since 2010 can be well past 20 GB.

What happens if you are over

Yahoo does not delete your mail. "Your existing emails will remain in your account as long as it stays active." What it does is stop the mailbox working: "You won't be able to receive or send new emails until space is cleared."

The line that matters most is about incoming mail: "Emails sent to you while your mailbox is full are not stored and can't be recovered." That is worse than a bounce. A sender may get no indication that the message went nowhere, and there is no copy to retrieve later.

Yahoo says it provides "a reasonable grace period after you receive notice that your account has exceeded its storage limit." It does not say how long. (Yahoo help)

How to check where you stand

Yahoo's storage page shows current usage against the 20 GB limit. In the mailbox, the storage meter appears in Settings under Mailboxes.

If the figure is near or over 20 GB, the next question is what is taking the space. In a typical Yahoo mailbox of that age it is not correspondence. It is fifteen years of retail newsletters, shipping notifications, and social-network digests, each with inline images, from a few dozen senders.

Folders that count

Yahoo's FAQ counts mail in every folder, and its cleanup guidance says to delete old or large emails and review large attachments. Two folders empty themselves: "Trash is deleted after 7 days" and "Spam is deleted after 30 days." (Yahoo help) Until then they occupy space, so emptying Trash yourself after a big delete brings the number down a week sooner.

Archive is a folder like any other. Archiving moves mail out of the Inbox and changes nothing about storage.

Getting under the line

1. Empty Trash and Spam. Immediate, and often a surprising amount.
2. Sort by attachment size. Yahoo's attachment view lists files across the mailbox. Save the ones worth keeping to your computer, then delete the messages.
3. Delete by sender. Search a sender's address, select all, delete. Yahoo's subscriptions view lists the senders you receive the most from and can unsubscribe in place. Doing both, delete and unsubscribe, is what stops the mailbox refilling. Inbox Scrub automates this pass; it is Gmail-first today, with other providers to follow.
4. Empty Trash again. The delete is not done until you do.
5. Or pay. Yahoo sells a 100 GB add-on for $1.99 a month and 1 TB for $9.99 a month. Yahoo Mail Plus is $5 a month with 200 GB and also keeps an inactive mailbox from being deleted. (Yahoo storage, Yahoo Mail Plus)

The other Yahoo clock

While you are in the settings, note that Yahoo also deletes the contents of any mailbox that goes 12 months without being opened, with reminders at 90, 60, and 30 days. (Yahoo help) If the address is one you keep for old accounts rather than daily use, a yearly sign-in matters more than the storage limit does.

Is 20 GB enough?

For a mailbox that is actively cleaned, yes, for a long time. At a typical 75 to 130 KB per message, 20 GB holds somewhere between 150,000 and 270,000 emails. The accounts that hit the wall are the ones that were never cleaned because they never had to be. That is not a storage problem so much as a first-time clean-up, and it only has to be done once if the senders that caused it are unsubscribed on the way out.
