Does archiving email free up space?
No. In Gmail, Outlook.com, iCloud, and Yahoo, "archive" moves a message out of the Inbox and keeps it on the server, so it counts toward your storage exactly as before. The only things that free space are deleting mail and then emptying Trash, or moving mail off the server to your own computer.

The short answer
Archiving is a filing action, not a storage action. Every major consumer provider implements it the same way: the message leaves the Inbox view and stays on the server. Nothing is compressed, nothing is removed, and your storage meter does not move.
That is by design. Archive exists so you can clear the Inbox without deciding whether to keep something. The trade-off is that a decade of archived newsletters weighs exactly as much as a decade of unread ones.

The one archive that does free space
Microsoft 365 business and enterprise plans include an Online Archive, sometimes called an In-Place Archive. It is a second mailbox with its own quota, and Microsoft says mail moved there "won't occupy space in your primary mailbox." (Microsoft support)
It is not available on free Outlook.com accounts or on Microsoft 365 Personal and Family, and it is not the same thing as the Archive folder or the Archive button. If your work account has it, it is the right place for old mail. If you are on a personal account, it does not apply.
Other buttons that sound like they free space
- Gmail Mute sends future replies in a conversation straight to the archive. It moves; it does not delete. (Gmail help)
- Outlook Sweep does delete. It can remove all mail from a sender, or everything older than ten days, and keep doing so. The mail goes to Deleted Items, which still counts until it empties, automatically after 30 days. (Microsoft support)
- Outlook Clean Up deletes redundant messages in a conversation, again to Deleted Items.
- Snooze and Mark as read change nothing about size.
The rule is simple: if the message can still be opened from the provider's website, it is still on the server and still counts.
How to keep old mail without paying for it
If the point of archiving is "I might need this some day," the way to get that without the storage cost is to move the mail off the server.
- Export a copy. Gmail exports through Google Takeout as an MBOX file, with your labels preserved in a header. Apple Mail has Mailbox → Export Mailbox. Outlook for Windows can AutoArchive older items into a local .pst file, or you can use its Import/Export wizard.
- Or move it to a local mailbox. In Apple Mail, mailboxes under "On My Mac" live on the computer, not the server. Drag old mail there and it leaves the account. (Apple support)
- Check the copy opens. Before deleting anything, open the exported file or local folder and confirm the messages are there. Exports are copies; nothing is freed until the next step.
- Delete the originals and empty Trash. This is the step that moves the storage meter.
- Back the local copy up. A .pst or .mbox file on one laptop is one drive failure from gone.
For most people the honest answer is that the archived mail is not worth this effort. The bulk of an old mailbox is not correspondence but notifications, receipts for things long since returned, and newsletters that were never opened. The faster route is to work sender by sender: find the ones with thousands of messages and low open rates, delete them all, and unsubscribe so the pile stops growing. When archiving is still the right call
